Car Won’t Start

If your Subaru isn’t starting or cranks very slowly, it is likely the battery doesn’t have enough charge to engage the starter. Before you blame your battery for the problem, check the alternator for wear. Since the battery relies on the alternator to recharge, a faulty alternator that is not properly charging the battery will cause it to drain. Replace the alternator to avoid having to jump-start the Subaru all the time.

Frequent Stalling

As the alternator starts failing, one sign you may notice is the engine stalling frequently while driving. This happens because a bad alternator is unable to supply the battery with enough amps to sustain electrical power. The battery depletes rapidly, which can cause the engine to randomly cut out from lack of power to the ignition system.

Unusual Sounds Under the Hood

Unusual noises when the engine is running could signal that your Subaru’s alternator is wearing out. Bad alternators usually produce a loud squeaking or chirping sound that gets louder as RPMs increase. This happens when the drive belt connecting the alternator to the engine becomes loose or worn. Failing alternator bearings can also cause a humming or growling sound under the hood.

Battery Warning Light

Your battery warning light can come on if you have a failing alternator. This is because the light comes on when the computer detects that the battery isn’t getting charged properly. Since the alternator is responsible for charging, its failure to provide adequate power will cause the battery warning light to come on. Test the charging system and replace the alternator to avoid being stranded with a dead car.

Dim or Extremely Bright Lights

Pay attention if your Subaru’s headlights and interior lights start to lose brightness or illuminate unevenly. As an aging alternator loses its capacity to regulate voltage, the lights may begin to dim or fluctuate as the system struggles to power them. The fluctuation in voltage can cause some of your bulbs to burn out, so replace the alternator immediately.

Issues with Accessories in the Car

If you notice issues with your electrical accessories, you could be dealing with a faulty alternator. Since the alternator is unable to supply enough power to the components, there will be problems like flickering headlights, the AC not working, intermittent operation of the radio, and failing power windows and locks. Have these electrical issues checked right away to prevent electrical damage to your accessories.

Don’t wait for a faulty alternator to leave you stranded with failing electrical systems. Contact Subaru Superstore of Surprise to schedule an alternator diagnosis and repair with our certified technicians.
